Fundraising

UASLA will hold its first Fall 2011 fundraiser during the SIRLSHomecomingEvent Reception on Thursday, November 3, 2011.So come on out and be generous!

Funds will be used for future events such as the special library project below.

Community Service

SLA members volunteered at the Tucson BioBlitz last Friday,October 20, 2011.

Currently, we are beginning work on a video/audio history projectof special librarians in Tucson in collaboration with SIRLS. Projectgoals include:

awareness and promotion of locallibrarians/special libraries
recording histories of local Library andInformation Science professionals and SIRLS alums

We hope to turn some of the interviews into group tourevents at different libraries around town. Interested in attending an upcoming library tour or learning more aboutlocal special libraries/librarians? LetUASLA know!

Volunteer Opportunity

The Tucson Teen Crisis Center is looking for a volunteer toput together a small (less than 100) print book collection. Interested? Contact Bryan Heidorn.

The second UA SLA meeting of the Fall 2011 Semester took place on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. The meeting began at 6:05 pm and ended at 7:00.

Fundraisers

Planning is underway for our first fundraising event: selling souvenir photos during Homecoming weekend, November 3-5, 2011.
UA SLA is also looking into hosting a Bingo night at Bumsteds after the success of the event last year. Dates are still TBD.

Semester Service Project

To learn about and be involved in the Tucson community,UA SLA members will undertake a service project each semester. For Fall 2011 the project will be working at the BioBlitz on October 21. The event still needs volunteers. Some SLA members have conflicts with the 21 October date; after-event LIS-related volunteer opportunities may be available. Interested? Contact the UA SLA Chapter for more information.

Events and Activities

The UA SLA student chapter is currently working on some fun and ambitious projects, including more community service and a movie/speaker night. More details will be provided as the projects take shape. Interested? Not interested? Voice your opinions, take part some fun projects, and help shape UA’s SLA chapter at our next meeting: Wednesday, October 12 6pm in the SIRLS multipurpose room.

Treasurer’s Report:

$471.38 in account. We are waiting for the proceeds from Bingo Night fundraiser at Bumsted’s -1/26/10.

Also if any of our officers/members attend three ASUA workshops this Spring, we can earn another $100.

SIRLS Student Symposium:

Set for Saturday, March 26, 2011 in the UA’s Modern Language Building, 3^rd floor. Tatiana Hladky is working with Brooke Laughlin as co-coordinators. We have positions filled for Website Registration (Davenna Rainsdon), Faculty Liaison (Diane Daly), Food Coordinator (Ramona Romandia), Poster Session (Christina Berlin Loa), Graphics Designer/poster/brochure (Rachel Castro), and Elluminate Coordinator (Tim Vande Zande).

Federal Librarian Forum:

Saturday, February 26, 2011. Tim Vande Zande set up an Elluminate Session for this forum. Rachel Castro will help with hospitality. Tatiana will get a moderator. This is a hybrid forum with people and attendees from all over the US and the SIRLS Multipurpose room.

Announcements:

Open House at the Tucson Museum of Art Library. Sunday, February 6, 2011 from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM – 140 N Main, Tucson. Launching of the Arizona Memory project. Free food, free art gallery exhibits, and free parking.

Progressive Librarian’s Guild (PLG) is holding a raffle: Two baskets and one bag of goodies. Tickets were sold at meeting.

Tanya will send out an email this weekend to the list serve for nominations for SLA.

Postal History Foundation tour will be on Saturday.

Discussion ensued about faculty recognition by the organizations given out at graduation. PLG hands out an award. Do we need to give out an award? Azul will check into this and old president will be contacted for more info.

Ramona brought up that Spring Fling participation needs to be done by Nov. 8^th. This event is April 7^th to the 10^th. Consensus is that we will not participate.

Ramona and Shawna will be invited to participate on OrgSync. Tanya will send out the invitation.

Bingo at Bumstead’s can be done after the first of the year. All three groups can participate and split the money. This will be spearheaded by Tanya.

Shawna motioned to end the meeting. Tanya seconded. Meeting was adjourned at 6:52 pm.

4.SLA President’s Report – Hire Me Workshop on 2 days, 2 parts, 2 sites. A resume and an interview component. April 28th at 6pm (a conflict). Possibly May 5th for Interview portion? Food costs? Diana is willing to pick up some items from Costco & asking for reimbursement. Some items left from AzLA event. Robert will talk to Sandy about a time of 6pm.
5.Treasurer’s Report – Sarah: Sunrise Silkscreen says 50 shirt minimum order per design. Prices depend on color of shirt, number of colors in the design. Darker colors are higher. Bigger sizes cost more. Two week turnaround. Balance for LSO: $2,213.99. Sarah will look for a lighter color for “SIRLS GONE WILD” for a lower price.

1.SLA status – renewed through ASUA but no new officers.
2.Networking site for ASUA can be joined. 5 people needed. Orgsync is a requirement. Calendar is what Robert feels would be an advantage.

New Business: Danielle
1.Semester recap – what worked? Joint events. Waste of efforts for own group to do big events. Share resources. Online notices seem to hurt. Joint socials. More events such as a Welcome Barbeque, Homecoming. Banned Books Week.
2.Other new business – tents? Pretty pricey. We can talk to Leslie about it.
3.Student Symposium – traditionally in the Fall. AzLA will be in November. Maybe move to the symposium to the Spring semester? More likely to get newer students to present in the Spring. Students can practice, then submit papers/posters to AzLA. Bring it up with Brian.
4.AzLA having a push to be active. Groups should keep in touch with them; use them as resources for panels, workshops. Ideas? LSO elections look good. Approve officers now?
5.Surveys show that face-to-face is what students want. Hybrid is next favorite.
9.Calendar – email for transition meeting for the outgoing/incoming LSO officers. Also a call for interest.

Discussed questions and comments for the ABOR meeting. SIRLS is requesting a fee increase and student groups support the increase:
* SIRLS is the 2nd largest graduate program in SBS.
* SIRLS obtains very little benefit from the UA fee and tuition hikes.
* SIRLS serves Hispanic and Native Americans.
* KR has 105 graduate students.
* SIRLS needs to stay funded so that it can stay accredited.
* The UA tuition and fee hikes will not benefit SIRLS directly.

Diana: Fee increase w/Brian. Trying to move forward on tuition break for distance students. Out of state 2nd w/comparable library school tuition.
Robert: some discussion regarding numbers. U of A in middle for instate, 2nd for out of state. SIRLS fees going up, with 15% going to scholarships. $250 instate, $150 out of state. Will be for Fall after Regent approval.
Danielle: all college services asking for more money. Surveying students about services. Discussion including new items in tech center, training for faculty. In d2l,advertising library services, training
Overall possible tuition increases amount to $1200.
Sarah: treas. Reports: $1961 in the treasury.
Danielle: lots of openings for leadership. Special election. Can run for office, nominate self or others. Can send something out, have elections. Put out this weekend, start voting on 8th. Leslie: good on resume. LSO: alumni liaison, fund-raising coordinator, prog coordinator (for prof. dev, mgmt., etc.), but might elim to consolidate, virt. Std liaison,. Winter 504 “dine around” will be 1/3/10, “meet and greet” on 1/4/10
Semester Recap: Tours in Phoenix were successful
Future SLA initiatives:
Keep up with HireMe, and have some programs earlier in the semester. Consider sessions on Job Searching, Resume Writing, and Salary Negotiation training.

Business:

Ian Finnesey has resigned as webmaster. Robert Talbert will act as interim webmaster for remainder of semester – forward necessary info to him.
Phoenix tour is Saturday, 11/21. Itinerary is AZ Historical Foundation from 11-12, lunch, then the Braille and Talking Books Library. If enough people from Tucson are interested, a van or carpool will be arranged. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
The annual SLA report is due Nov. 30th. The draft is available for review, so please suggest necessary changes. Names of national members should be included on the report.

1)The Fall Report to SLA is due Nov. 30, to include a plan of programs, officers list, student group advisor. The annual report is due April 30.
2)Don’t forget to buy a raffle ticket for the REFORMA Tucson Scholarship! It supports creation of a scholarship for SIRLS students. The tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5 and can be purchased from REFORMA Tucson members or from Jessica Hernandez at jnhernan@email.arizona.edu.
3)Join REFORMA at the El Charro Café, 311 N. Court Ave., on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 6:00pm. Proceeds from the dinner support SIRLS scholarships.
4)SLA has agreed to support the Refugee Health Fair at the Martha Cooper Branch Library by donating $60 to fund an interpreter for the event.
5)A tour of the AZ State Braille and Talking Book Library and the State Archives in Phoenix is scheduled for October 24. A university van will transport interested students from Tucson to Phoenix. Contact Jacy Bell for additional details.

Business:

There will be a celebration for the new director in the SIRLS courtyard on Monday, Oct. 5th from 5-7. Alcohol will be served! RSVP Molly Stother-Maurer at stothert@email.arizona.edu
SLA needs volunteers to help clean up the student group area.
Still looking for nominations for SLA events coordinator and fund raising coordinator. Kyle Willis has been nominated for fund raising coordinator, but would like to have some competition.
Fall Events Update: Tours of the Historical Society Archives in Phoenix and the Tucson Juvenile Prison Library are on the table. Consensus is any tour would need to be on a Saturday. Dave Langen will schedule and plan Tucson Juvenile Prison Library tour, but still looking for someone to coordinate Phoenix tour with contact Sue Irwin. Volunteers? Also suggested to hold tour on Oct. 22 instead of Special Library Panel scheduled for same day.
Student group presidents met with Tom Wilding on the 14th to talk about student involvement in organizations, faculty advising concerns, and faculty involvement in group events. Presidents will also meet with new director on Oct. 26.
RUSA proposal to meet with SIRLS students for $400 in brochure fees is discussed. Decision is made that cost is prohibitive but group is welcome to attend normal library panel functions.

One website that I look at often for library jobs is www.LISjobs.com. They recently reworked their entire website and now there is a lot of information regarding education, scholarships and job searching.

Under the Job Seekers tab, you can click on Job ads to see the most recent listings, but there is also a section that has links to resume resources, searching advice and salary information.

Under the Career Development tab, there are several links including a blog that is based on the book Rethinking Information Careers which is used in 504.

Under the Education tab, click on the scholarships link and there is a lot of information there.

I sent out an email to officers while earlier in the planning stages, but I thought I'd post what I'm working on here, and also ask if anyone had suggestions for dates:
(All of these events and locations are in Tucson.)

1. Vendor relations workshop with Sandy Kramer, Leslie, and possibly a rep from Elsevier.

2. Tour of a medical library (AHSL) and discussion about medical librarianship (with Sandy Kramer).

3. Discussion, with possible tour, of a college art school library. This college is private, so it would also somewhat be a corporate library. This would be with Suzan Brown.

4. Combine with LSO for a resume/interviewing workshop, also with Sandy Kramer.

As a side note, I did contact Judith Seiss from One Person Librarian, and she said she'd love to come to Arizona at some point; possibly next semester, but she cannot this semester. Because we are a student group, she would only charge us travel and hotel. Just something to think about for whomever is the next Events Coordinator.

Please do let me know if you have any input, because I will be trying to solidify dates by the end of next week.
